Booking Scams: How to Protect Yourself

Warning About Booking Scams: How to Protect Yourself and Why to Book Directly with the Hotel

Recently, new scam tactics have been uncovered on popular booking platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb. Scammers are using sophisticated strategies that are difficult to detect, even for experienced users.

How do these scams work?

Fraudulent emails are sent, seemingly from trusted platforms, informing you of a problem with your reservation payment. The email contains a link to a fake website that is a highly accurate copy of the original. This fake site pre-fills your booking details, including dates, price, and location, to make everything appear legitimate.

The only way to often detect the scam is by checking the URL address. Scammers make sure their fake sites look identical to the real ones, but the URL will differ from the official website.

How to protect yourself from scams:

1.      Check the URL – Always verify that the site where you're entering payment information has the correct URL. Legitimate booking websites will have the correct domain name.

2.      Verify payments – If you receive an email about a payment issue, never click the link in the message. Instead, go directly to the official website and log in to your account.

3.      Book directly – The safest way to avoid scams is to book accommodations directly through the hotel’s website, by phone, or via email. This way, you bypass third-party platforms and get a direct confirmation from the hotel.
