Slavín, a memory of the war

The monumental war memorial of fallen Soviet soldiers belongs to the most famous landmarks of Bratislava. It often attracts tourists as well as locals thanks to the beautiful view of the city it is offering from the unique uphill location.

Slavín monument was built in 1957 – 1960 and in 1962 it was declared a national cultural monument. Nearly 7,000 Red Army soldiers who fell in the conquest of the city during World War II in April 1945 are buried here. In the central part of the site there is a ceremonial room, part of which is almost 40 meters high obelisk-shaped monument. Numerous memorial sculptures created by Slovak sculptors of the 20th century are presented on site.

Since May, the monument is lit at night, reminding a radiant beacon. New lighting system was a gift from the Russian embassy. Bratislava Tourism Organization is considering organizing the night tours to the monument in the future.
