Trip to Devin Castle

Devin Castle is one of the three oldest castles in Slovakia. Today, the majestic ruin, symbol of Slovak history, is a remnant of a Gothic castle, strategically located at the confluence of the rivers Danube and Morava. Devin castle has very rich history.

In written it was mentioned as Dowina in 864 for the first time. But the history of this exceptional strategic area goes much further back to the ancient history. It was inhabited since prehistoric times and during the Roman empire times it was a part of the defense system called Linus Romanus.

During the time of the Great Moravian Empire a strategic fortress of the emperor Rastislav was built in this location. In the 13th and later the 16th-century the castle was extended by large construction, but in 1809 it was burned Napoleon’s army.

Devin Castle and its surroundings are one of the most important archaeological sites in Slovakia. Devín Castle was declared a national cultural monument in 1961.
Today the castle and its surroundings is very popular spot for day trips from Bratislava, also thanks to beautiful view of the countryside below. Exhibition hall is located in the basement of the central part of the castle.

The castle ruins stand close to the highest peak around Bratislava called Devinska Kobyla. A western part of the peak called Sandberg is well known for discoveries of Tertiary fossils.

The upper part of the castle is still closed due to current reconstruction.
